Access is the greatest human equalizer and that is why the Internet is the greatest man-made creation. Simplicity increases access exponentially. 99.99999% of people on the Internet don't know anything about HTML or Js. All they see is a simple interface designed for interaction.
Access is more about interfaces than processes. Equal access provides a wider surface area for transactions. Transactions are what create wealth and improve opportunity. Each time I hear about inclusion without focus on access, I roll my eyes. It is about access first before work
If we want to bridge the divide between humans, we provide more access. I have seen what cell phones and motorcycles did in Africa. The next frontier is energy access and that is why renewable and cheap energy is vital. Access is innovation that becomes infrastructure.
Jio in India provided access and made a killing. Google got it in Africa but their efforts have been limited by regulations and governments. CSquared has changed Accra and maybe Ghana forever. The next phase is to provide this access at a much cheaper cost to most consumers.
USSD as a simple interface has increased access tremendously because of its low barrier to entry. The key term is ”barrier to entry.” Entry barriers are about access and interfaces, not process or regulation. We keep focussing on the wrong things. Access should be permissionless.
OTT platforms like WhatsApp have been able to scale because they provide access without too much headache. They connect to your address book and make people who are also already connected available. A simple interface creating access to a wider surface area and more transactions.
A browser is permissionless. Social media is permissionless. Most things that are at scale don't have barriers to entry because they remove barriers to entry by their very nature. That is the key to inclusion. Remove permissions and borders. If you have to ask, it isn't inclusion
Nobody teaches anyone how to use USSD or WhatsApp. They find out and learn because there is value. I believe wealth creation and opportunity should be the same way. Create interfaces that provide enough value for people to come in by themselves. You don't need to advertise.
Another key point is that interfaces have to be reliable to provide value. We use what ALWAYS works.
The Internet of wealth and opportunity is the Internet. Creating more access to it is what will bridge the divide. The opportunity divide is now the same as the digital divide. It is not just about industrialization anymore as the nature of work and value creation is changing.
