There was fear; real fear.But we got the better of that, being resilient in fact.
The loss was insufferable though. The loss of time,with those we saw and those we couldn’t see.
Triaging charts for priority,staring at screens, talking down empty phone lines,seeking to reassure.

Working long hours, seeking new ways forwards. Catching up on surgical backlogs and the quiet satisfaction knowing that the ones you knew about were safe again, stable.
But what about the ones you didn’t?
The silent, patient waiters.
3.Hours of family time missed,hours of contact time with patients also gone as you watched and worried at the ever-growing waiting list. No small chat,nor the deeper conversations born in a moment when a glance,a furrowed brow,a grimace betray the unspoken story beneath the words

All lost and muffled in a mask and PPE.
No human touch, just the endless, countless hand sanitising rituals, like wringing of hands, reassuring but distracting, symbolising the barriers or the loss of humanity, as we cleanse ourselves of each other.

And yet it returns in force. It’s not lies,nor false facts,not scaremongering, nor laziness, absenteeism nor any of those alternative realities that even msm sometimes air. It is suffering and death. At every level. Cumulative delays in care of other illness, loss of capacity.
The reality is hard,solid fact and those who cross our doors,or wait to do so, know this.
Pain, suffering, loss of ability, illness, decline and death. There is only so much capacity in any system. We are doing the best we can but Covid overwhelms everything.

Please, please and please stay home, wash hands, wear masks and keep distance.
We will all do our best, but it won’t be enough without everyone behind us.

We can do this once more with everyone’s support.
