Back when @DLidington was Justice secretary he clarified the law at my request: this is an offence under the 2003 Sexual Offences Act, section 52, and carries a prison sentence of up to 7 years.

I was often contacted by her advisors with updates: they seemed to really care.

Three things need to happen now:
1. Enforcement. Placing these ads is an offence. Hundreds are live right now but no-one has ever been brought to justice.
Think about it: these perpetrators actually advertise their crime with phone number attached...why so hard to charge them?

2. Create a specific offence.
Currently the law used is ‘incitement to prostitution’ which means victims are legally defined as prostitutes.
This is a huge disincentive to victims coming forward.
A new offence could be created quickly with a simple amendment.

3. Bring Craigslist either to task or to justice.
They are profiting from the sexual exploitation of British youngsters. Instead of treating them as the pimps they are, they’re feted as Californian tech gurus.

Once people succumb to ‘sex for rent’ it’s sometimes hard to escape.
In areas like Oxford, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, London and Brighton, accommodation is expensive and scarce. Victims get trapped and enslaved.
Covid is being used by perpetrators to further exploit victims.
