Despite all the hate, Mount has become an integral part of both Chelsea & England. This thread will explore the underlying numbers behind Mount's rise this season, showing you why he has the potential to be a complete midfielder and one of the best players of his generation!
ATTACKING:
A common criticism of Mount’s performances last season was that he was not effective in the final third. This season, he has really improved and currently plays an integral role in Chelsea's build-up and attack - especially in the absence of Hakim Ziyech.

Mount has more goal-creating actions (7) than any other U-23 player in the league. Despite having only 3 assists, Mount has made 54 shot-creating actions. His low assists are down to poor finishing from Chelsea. In terms of creativity, Mount is consistently taking responsibility

Mount's awareness in possession is phenomenal for someone his age. He knows exactly when to turn, when to dribble, when to pass back, and when to switch the play to the other side. Mount has made 42 successful switches (top 10 in the PL). At Chelsea, only Zouma has more.

DEFENDING:
Impressing in the defensive phase is nearly impossible when N’Golo Kante is your teammate. Yet, Mount is regarded very highly among fans for his defensive awareness and efforts. He matches Kante’s work ethic and desire to win the ball back whenever Chelsea loses it.

Mount was always a good presser, probably even one of the best in the world. His 278 pressures are only bettered by Kante (315). Mount leads Chelsea's press, with 80 of his pressures coming in the attacking third. This puts pressure on defenders, forcing them to go long.
Mount has also made more tackles (21) than any other #CFC player other than Kante. But it's not fair to compare Mount (or anyone) to a world-class ball winner like Kante. Instead, let us compare Mount's defensive numbers from the 2019 season to the current one:
•Mount is making more interceptions per game (1.1 vs 0.4)

•Mount is winning more duels per game (5 vs 3.4)

DRIBBLING:
Mount is not the quickest player. As Lampard said, he does not possess a bag of flicks and tricks like other players his age. But what he does possess is tremendous awareness of the opponent's position as well as phenomenal technical ability.

To my surprise, Mount is Chelsea's second-best dribbler in terms of quantity of dribbles completed. Only Pulisic (20) has completed more dribbles than Mount (18). Interestingly, Mount is also joint 7th for most nutmegs on an opponent (4). Not flashy at all, but very efficient.
Mount has worked on gaining muscle (I tweeted about this last month). This has made him stronger and has allowed him to shield the ball better, thereby making him a more effective ball carrier. Only Kante & Chilwell have carried the ball a greater progressive distance (3926yards)
FITNESS & DURABILITY:
There are few players out there who are fitter and more durable than Mount. Whenever I watch him play, he is always giving his best and never looks tired. Even in recent games where Chelsea haven't been at their best, Mount has not dropped his level.

Astonishingly, Mason Mount has never missed a single Chelsea game due to injury. Considering how congested the last two seasons have been, this is an incredible accomplishment. He's a manager's dream because he only cares about the team. No wonder Lampard & Southgate love him!
CONCLUSION:
Mount has already established himself as one of the best young talents in the PL. This season, he'll look to establish himself on the European stage. There are few players his age who are as well-rounded as he is. He possesses every attribute you need in a midfielder.

Stats cannot measure mentality & desire. When Havertz joined we all expected Mount to play a more peripheral role. However, he is the kind of player who thrives under pressure and loves to prove people wrong. Everything about him suggests that he will be world-class very soon!
