how the blackest day by lana del rey is a masterpiece that perfectly portrays the 5 stages of grief, a thread:
DENIAL: in the first verse, lana describes how she doesn’t want to break up with her boyfriend and how that he’s in the wrong by doing so. with this, she’s denying that there were issues with their relationship and only focusing on the good things that she remembers.
BARGAINING: this stage can be seen throughout the whole narrative of the song in which she’s trying to get her boyfriend to stay with her. she clings on to the few things that she still can in their relationship because the doesn’t want to accept that it’s over.
ANGER: lana describes this stage in the bridge, where the song gets more intense and she starts blaming her bf for the end of the relationship. she tells him that he “should’ve known better” and that he’s “deader than ever”, which is her way of lashing out at him.
DEPRESSION: this stage is seen throughout the entire song, but especially in the chorus where she literally describes her life as “the blackest day” and in the second prechorus where she says that she “can’t feel nothing” anymore (which is a textbook symptom of depression)
ACCEPTANCE: the last stage of grief is shown in the outro, where lana finally admits that the relationship is over and stops trying to cling onto what they had. she accepts that she’s “on her own again”, as much as she wishes she wasn’t.
