so I was just thinking about girl meets world and how the creator said that where boy meets world was about romantic love, girl meets world was about friendship. but they made all these parallels between the relationships on the 2 shows. so what made gmw “platonic friendship”?
it was a relationship between 2 girls. they literally took tropes and a relationship dynamic between a m/f endgame otp and decided they’d be platonic if it were between 2 girls instead. they changed almost nothing. the result is they’re soulmates but in a no-homo kind of way?
and I sometimes wonder if that’s what’s going on with Supergirl. like they couldn’t have her with a *man* who needed rescuing all the time, so they gave her Lena to be her Lois... and bc of heteronormativity, it just didn’t occur to anyone that doing so would come across gay af.
these people wanted to make a Superman show so badly that they literally just inserted Kara into Clark situations - bridal carrying the pretty girl out of danger over and over again... and didn’t think that if it would be romantic for him, it would be romantic for her too.
and don’t get me wrong, I’m not letting anyone off the hook for intentional queerbaiting. this has been going on for YEARS now. they know exactly what they’re doing NOW. I just wonder if it started that way... it would be so stupid I’d believe it.
and the thing is, it would also explain why they’ve floundered so much in trying to find a man suitable for Kara. bc they don’t know any other story besides “hero rescues damsel; in love now” so they’re stuck bc a woman can’t be a man’s constant rescuer & have that be romantic.
the only man known to exist who’s anywhere close to matching Kara’s strength is her cousin so she can’t be with him. and they just don’t know how to let her be the strongest person on earth and write a man who’d be happy with that and want to be with her. they don’t know how.
so now they’ve painted themselves into this corner. Lena is Kara’s obvious LI, based on all the Superman tropes... but they keep trying to no-homo this ship bc their precious Supergirl can’t be gay! but they want a romantic endgame for Kara... and now nothing else makes sense.
