For the “keep your head up” and “see what you hit” crowd tell me where this hit would’ve been had he kept going straight. That’s right, head to head. What’s he supposed to do? Stand up and hit him with his chest? No, that’s leaving your feet and launching. Dive at his ankles?
My final thoughts on this: they’re penalizing result, not process. Watch the hit in full speed. Dirty and malicious hits are obvious in full speed, yet it took until after they got Fields off the field to even take a look at it. If he pops up, they keep playing. Simple as that.
I’m going to add one last thing: I love the direction of football in regards to player safety. I’ve always been a proponent of not using your head, and playing safe. Eliminating using head/neck as coaching cues. It’s great we’re making the game safer. Just be consistent with it.
