No matter how great or terrible a year has been, music will always be the best part of it.

10. Savage Mode 2 by 21 Savage & Metro Boomin
The first SM displayed great chemistry between a rapper & producer. The Morgan Freeman narrated SM2 turns a collection of songs into a concept. The growth is noticeable as this project shows us what Savage Mode truly means.

9. Circles by Mac Miller
Circles is an intimate journey through Mac Miller’s mind. He shares his darkest thoughts while teaching us how to overcome them. It’s the perfect farewell and the kind of optimism we needed in 2020.

8. From King to a God by Conway (Deluxe)
“They love me for the fact I’m actually harder, I probably sold crack to your mother & smack to your father” Conway raps with certainty. FKTG has the unapologetic rawness that made me love Griselda while also making me wonder what’s next.

7. Black Habits by D Smoke
You can be a positive product of a flawed environment, D Smoke’s debut proves that. BH captures the listener for 1 hour of inspiration. In a year like 2020, I find myself revisiting this album to regain a peace of mind.

6. Manger on McNichols by Boldy James & Sterling Toles
There’s something so beautiful about finding balance between openness & gangster. Boldy found that balance and pulled the listener into not only his mind, but Detroit itself. MOM is a beautifully layered masterpiece.

5. It Is What It Is by Thundercat
It Is What It Is is an album you get lost in. It uplifts you, makes you sad, and has you asking a lot of questions within 37 minutes. Thundercat fills your mind with pure expression and it’s a great followup to his 2017 classic.

4. As God Intended by Apollo Brown & Che Noir
As God Intended is a breath of fresh air. A black woman being unafraid of the past while her pensive lyricism is complemented by brash production. What’s scary about it all is that this is just the beginning.

3. Miles by Blu & Exile
What’s a better to pay homage to the late & great Miles Davis than a masterpiece revolved around honesty? I can’t think of one neither. The duration of an album flies by when the experience is fulfilling. I will call Miles a classic one day.

2. Lianne La Havas by Lianne La Havas
During a time when R&B is more upbeat and less emotional, it’s refreshing to hear something pure. Lianne blessed our ears with a story about love & healing. An excellent addition to a growing discography.

1. Couldn’t Wait To Tell You... by Liv.e
Each time I listen to this masterpiece it feels like the first time I heard it. It contains sounds you never heard, but lyrics your soul can feel. An unorthodox approach to R&B that will go down as a cult classic.
