IMPORTANT THREAD: Against all qualified advice, research, common sense, and the actual drug licenses of the formulations involved, @BorisJohnson and @MattHancock have decided to summarily alter the Covid19 vaccine schedule from 3 weeks to 12 weeks. 1/n
My best guess is that they're doing this because, despite all their triumphant crowing about securing tens of millions of doses, they haven't procured enough supply, or they're only now realising that we don't have nearly enough cold storage to hold millions of doses at -70C. 2/n
Side note: Britain is paying DOUBLE at $36 per dose what the EU are paying at $18 even though the EU offered to include Britain in the bulk buy. Britain said no. Because of course we did. 3/n
As it happens I've volunteered to staff some vaccination clinics alongside my full time job, and I now find myself in a very uncomfortable position: I'm being told to administer medication in a manner that I know isnt supported by research and isn't licensed by the MHRA. 4/n
Unfortunately for myself and other nurses the NMC takes a dim view of wrongly administering medications, especially when you do it repeatedly and deliberately. I somehow doubt that "Boris Johnson told me to do it" carries much weight at a fitness to practice hearing. 5/n
Following a prescription or PGD is not an excuse: we're independent registered practitioners, accountable for our own acts and omissions. We're expected to know what we're giving and how to give it, and to not follow prescriptions we know to be wrong. 6/n
What's troubling the hell out of me is that I haven't yet heard a journalist asking what political mess this policy is trying to hide, and I haven't heard a word from the nursing unions objecting to nurses being put in this position. 7/fin
