Ok so #Bridgerton was enjoyable nonsense that was def well worth a binge at the end of the 💩 show that was 2020. Some quick thoughts. THREAD.
Ppl who fancy men are waaaayyy better served in #Bridgerton than ppl ago fancy women (IMO). Not a problem just an observation
Lady Danvers is one of stand out characters - more of her in season 2 pls. #Bridgerton
The queens wigs were 👌🏾 #Bridgerton
The brothers all looked the same and I kept thinking the older one had too much eyeliner #Bridgerton
Ok elephant in the room... race in #Bridgerton . It’s not a documentary + ppl who are having babies about there being too many black ppl need to suck their mums but... some quick points .
#Bridgerton is set in 1813 I think . In 1807 last 4 British slave ships left to legally transport Africans in slavery set sail across the Atlantic. There would have been a Black population in London in 1813 but prob small and mostly trades ppl/the poor.
It is almost certain that members of the aristocracy of the time would have made their fortunes directly from the slave trade or the colonies (sugar etc) or related. #Bridgerton to have relatively large nos of Black and mixed cast + make hardly any ref at all to that seems odd.
The Featheringtons are facing financial ruin. It’s played as Lord Featherington having a gambling problem but he could have suddenly found his business affairs screwed if they were directly linked to the recently illegal slave trade #Bridgerton
Colourism in #Bridgerton ... nearly all of the significant Black characters (speaking parts) are light skinned. That’s a whole nother thread ...
I was surprised that they made the Duke of Hastings mono racial. (Although unpack that his dark skinned dad was an absolute prick) . Prob a more believable thing (for the time) would have been a white aristocratic Dad and Black mum (prob from the colonies) #Bridgerton
Race is only mentioned twice that I noticed and very very fleetingly and obliquely. They should have left it completely and gone full kumbuyah or done a better job #Bridgerton
Time 1. Lady Danvers talking to Hot Hastings about how their position on society is still precarious but made better by a Black Queen. It’s not explicit but the racial undertone is there. Also such a cheesy speech re interracial love conquering all 🙃🙃. #Bridgerton
Time 2. Lord Featherington visiting hot boxer (HB). I forget the precise words but he a alludes to HB’s dad having to secure his freedom (implying he may have been enslaved) and wanting more for his son than scratching a living from travelling exhibitions. #Bridgerton
#Bridgerton is a perfect example of how visible racial diversity is lovely (Mostly black and mixed black here). But the script also needs to acknowledge that in some way particularly given the societal backdrop at this period and not necessarily in a clunky or moralistic way.
Aside: for the above point see also Luther and Killing Eve (both of which I love but...
Ok so sex scenes in #Bridgerton . Hastings has fine abs and is an extremely attractive man but really the sex scenes were a bit *whispers ... boring ?
Maybe It’s bc Daphne isn’t my type but there were ones on her and Hastings’ honeymoon that felt like they were from a 90s melodrama (incl the soundtrack) and went on way too long. Basically all the sex scenes in bed were #brigerton
Accents and #Bridgerton (via @CampbellX ) . It’s alright guys Game of Thrones has normalised Lords with Northern accents. We can shake it up a bit voice wise next season. Also at this time Britain was coloniser - they’d be accents from across the empire esp at court.
Sexuality and #Bridgerton . Did the writers get cold feet? Some of the most blatant flirting in the whole series was the famous artist and brother 2. Want messy, fabulous bi drama from him in season 2 pls 🏳️‍🌈
Eloise ... potentially another great character in #BRIDGERTON . She had some of the best lines. Getting early Ayra Stark from #GameOfThrones vibes 👍🏾Also agree with @bmbm that she’s potential source of a future 🏳️‍🌈 storyline but more angst and less fun than brother 2’s .
Asian ppl in #BRIDGERTON . It’s been compared to Gossip Girl, comparison works in a few ways. 1. Both about high society 2. In both Asian ppl have hardly any speaking parts .
After being invested in them as a couple, Daphne + Hastings annoyed me in the final two episodes. The rift was annoying and needless and would have been solved by a conversation it felt unnecessarily drawn out and that grated. #Bridgerton
Episode 6. Are we going to mention that Daphne sexually assaulted Hastings ?! In a year that ppl were raving about I may destroy you and consent I’m surprised I’ve not seen more comment re this. In fact it was played it as if she was the wronged party- she wasn’t . #Bridgerton
