So. If youve read Briarley by @AsterGlenn that Ive previously hyped up on here, you know that her stories are full of so much heart and kindness and humor. Her character work is stellar. I also knew she knows how to handle Russian culture, so imagine my excitement for Honeytrap
Honeytrap is a novel mainly set in 1959, although there are some massive time jumps. Its about two secret agents, one american and one russian, whos countries team up to investigate the botched assassination attempt on one Nikita Sergeyevich Khrushchev on his state trip in Ohio
Daniel, the american, and Gennady, the russian, set off on a roadtrip to attempt an investigation, mostly for optics' sake. Hilarious hijinks ensue as they try to follow leads and befriend each other. Its great

Of course thats not all thats happening. Daniel is told to attempt
to convince Gennady to desert from the soviet union bcs the fbi wpuld like his intel. Daniel, who grew up next to some russian cultural attachés and learned to secretly love the culture and thus was excited at the prospect of a russian partner, is unhappy about this
Now Gennady. Gennady who has lived through the worst that the soviet union had to offer and who grew up on the exciting american roadtrip tales of Ilf and Petrov, was so, so happy about his own impending american roadtrip. So when his superior orders him to honeytrap his new
partner for blackmail, hes devastated. He doesn't want to do it, he promises himself he will never do it. But it throws a wrench into everything

Of course their relationship gets complicated. Theyre agents on opposing sides of a complicated political conflict. They can never be
truly honest with each other, since theyre ordered to report on each other, gather any blackmail.
And yet, their friendship grows. They tease each other, and joke around. The first half of the book is so funny. The cultural clash is so fucking good. Genyas deadpan sarcasm is 👌👌
For real tho, Genya's humor is Top Notch. God its such a pitch perfect russian humor, i love it so much. Look at this shit. Im cackling
So they investigate, they spend months together becoming friends. They bond over books and its beautiful. This is my favourite passage about poetry
This book starts off so funny. Its hilarious, the guys are hilarious, but, well. This is a book about two bisexual guys in 1959, one of which is a citizen of the soviet union, and heres why i personally think this is one of the Best Books. Because the way it portrays the SS? Phew
