Here is the breakdown from a responsible breeder on the cost of having a litter of puppies:
Price of a puppy? Most don’t think what a good breeder goes through from searching for the right dam to add to their program or looking for a complementing stud. It's not as easy as "I have a great dog and I want to have puppies" although that happens quite frequently and
buyers jump at the chance to own a pup for $500 or less without thinking of the lifetime of the pup or it’s long term health.

A purebred dog of any breed is not "cheap". You can find "cheap" on craigslist, shelters and rescues.
