This is a bad take for a number of reasons. Some of them:

(1) I'd love to see an example of Republicans teaching people to fish. But other than rhetoric to disparage welfare, I'd have trouble coming up with any substantive examples.

(2) Teaching some to fish is groovy. 1/ https://twitter.com/gopTODD/status/1345042680292622339
But it doesn't do much good when the person doesn't have a fishing pole, a net, transportation to water, clean water that has fish in it, time off from work to fish, child care while you're fishing, some sort of safety net in case the fish aren't biting, etc. 2/
(3) Also, I'd love to have someone explain to me how giving fish and teaching to fish are an opposing binary. Like, it's certainly possible to feed someone and also teach them how to make their own food.

Unemployment insurance is a standout example of this. 3/
The expanded UI helped a lot of people deal with job loss from a pandemic, job loss that had nothing to do with their performance and that they could have done absolutely nothing to prevent. But giving them the fish of UI didn't prevent them from searching for--and accepting-- 4/
jobs when jobs were available. It merely gave them a cushion while they looked.

So I'm basically done with the give them fish/teach them to fish opposition. In some circumstances it's better to teach them to fish. In others, it's better to give them a fish (or better, cash). 5/
But the situations where you can only do one or the other are extremely rare, approaching zero. 6/6
