Great thread @sunilbhop. My 2p on why we’re failing to prioritise kids in this pandemic:
1.) kids lack advocates - @annelongfield @russellviner @apsmunro you and I and many others have regularly tried to use our voices, but they are drowned out compared to the business lobby https://twitter.com/sunilbhop/status/1345086411435880448
2.) the world, and definitely the uk, is run by men - and kids, especially care for the youngest kids - remains a gendered issue. See great work from @WEP_UK and childcare for example.
3.) the world is run by older people who are, understandably, worried about their own risks, and who may (often unconsciously) downplay the risks/harms to the next generation.
4.) schools are ‘on the organogram’ for the government in a way that private industry isn’t, so it’s easier to control (despite the ‘free schools’ branding), and
5.) (perhaps most importantly) our government has pissed away trust and goodwill in this pandemic from the start. Losing trust amongst teachers for example has been extremely costly.
6.) (looking bit closer to home), I think that disciplinary boundaries in public health have played a part- when epidemic modelling is only half the equation, we need to be better at complexity + working together. That some have called this ‘fence sitting’ illustrates the problem
I’m sure there are many more underlying issues here though, and these deserve urgent consideration. A really important issue; thanks for raising. End.
