Anwar's case was presented to a panel comprising of football experts, officials, medics & legal advisors. A detailed medical report prepared by the Chairman of England FA's Cardiology Consensus Panel was submitted. 1/n https://twitter.com/debapriya_deb/status/1345007098497646594
As per the report, Anwar is diagnosed with Apical Hypercardio Myopathy (HCM). There's a small risk of (less than 1% risk profile) potentially serious arrhythmias, but athletes with similar conditions, or worse, have been allowed to play without fatalities involved. 2/n
The case study also lists down a list of over 100 athletes in high-intensity contact sports like football, mostly from various European countries, who have been allowed to continue despite being diagnosed with similar/more severe cardiac conditions. 3/n
In other words, Anwar's bid to play again is "reasonably safe". Now in a major boost to Anwar's case, the above view of Dr. Sanjay Sharma, a Professor of Cardiology at St George's, University of London, is backed by the reputed 26-member European Society of Cardiology (ESC). 4/n
According to ESC research, an athlete who is asymptomatic, have a low risk profile and do not have left ventricular outflow obstruction of greater than 30 mm Hg are reasonably safe to participate in competitive high-intensity contact sports. Anwar satisfies this criteria. 5/n
All these points were discussed in detail in yesterday's meeting, but the experts couldn't arrive at a definite conclusion. So they met up again this afternoon and the overwhelming majority expressed their approval to let Anwar get back to competitive football. 6/n
Now it is upto the AIFF medical panel to take the final decision. Only thing that can prevent Anwar from returning can be the authorities ego. If there's even an iota of wisdom left in AIFF, then it's a no brainer to lift the unfair diktat. They have NOT provided NOC yet. 7/n
If one man deserves credit for single-handedly taking on the football governing body, then it's none other than @THE_RanjitBajaj sir. No amount of gratitude is enough to acknowledge his tireless contribution & never-say-die mentality to help this highly promising young lad. 8/n
Now the important question. If AIFF finally lifts the ban, where is Anwar heading to? #EastBengal is the front runner and some believe that there's already a deal in place. But don't rule out #FCGoa, who have also joined the race to sign the youngster. 9/n
If game time and money are the deciding factors, then #EastBengal can be Anwar Ali's preferred destination. But if he decides on a comeback bid far away from constant media scrutiny and sometimes undeserved expectations, then #FCGoa can be a safer bet. 10/10
If you have shown the patience to reach till the end of this long thread, then a big thank you! :)
