What's it about? It's a space opera SciFi series set in the distant future where two interstellar nations, one a dictatorship and the other a democracy, are embroiled in a never ending war and it focuses on two characters from the two nations, their rivalry and rise in power.
I wanted to clear this misconception sorrounding this anime. It's not trying to be complex or abstract in any way shape or form. Yes, it has its wide range of themes it's exploring & different factions being an epic but the story is straightforward & is not at all overwhelming.
The Perspective
Lotgh is the only series where it genuinely feels there are two protagonists in the show who are antagonists to each other. The two perspectives are handled in a beautiful unbiased way with each sides getting equal focus, it's amazing irrespective of its setting

Legendary Cast of Characters
Not only do we follow two very different, equally amazing protagonists, the characters around them are almost as fascinating, different and wonderful individuals. You root for all of them while these very human characters oppose each other.

The Politics
The series is basically a war between two nations, a democracy and a dictatorship. And it delves into the importance, their ups and downs, limitations. It starts off pretty basic in its political themes and goes in depth in its exploration as the episodes go by.

All the important aspect of war is touched upon - whether it's the glory, the affect it has on society, it shows us how horrible it can be and even how economically essential it can be at times. It delves into terrorism, relegious cults, coup d'etats and how they factor in wars.
It's Respect and Love for History
Idk, this aspect is something I personally really loved, which was similiar in RoV too. It makes you want to learn more about history. Yang talking about history really feels like the authors love letter to the subject, it feels genuine.

Unpredictability
There are so many seemingly tropey characters and moments we think we know, but the show completely fucks us over with new characterization to the character or plot twists that completely deviate from where we think it's going. It's really unpredictable.

Underrated beauty in its presentation
The space war sequences are horrifyingly beautiful. It's not a hypefest. It's done in such a way you feel bad for every ship getting blown, you think about every individual in the ship. Its something that I haven't seen the remake replicate.

-voice acting performances, with the attention to detail in its sound design all played an amazing role in making the show as atmospheric, timeless and amazing as it is. I'll share a very good thread talking about the ost placement of the show. https://twitter.com/DarthStorey/status/1341676208484982786?s=19
Lotgh does not feel like an anime. It feels like a historic war documentary set in the distant future. The character designs, the music & its direction make it that way and I love it. It feels so raw, real, un anime, and it's thematically & tonally right. Makes the show timeless.
