Holding myself to account for my #AllyPledge (or in fact pledges) for increasing #equity in #STEM in 2020. How did I do....?
I pledged to continue nominating BAME colleagues for awards. I stuck to this, and will continue to do so in 2021. I'd like to encourage others to do likewise. #AllyPledge https://twitter.com/ProfRachelGaN/status/1212140500674916353?s=20
I also pledged to push for systemic change to achieve equity in our funding systems, particularly via the #MyScienceInquiry process. I did keep pushing, but have somewhat run out of paths forward for that particular process. I'm working on some new plans. https://twitter.com/ProfRachelGaN/status/1212484499646357505?s=20
Later in the year, I made an additional pledge, to educate myself about racism in STEM. I've done a lot of reading, including with the @tigerinstemm reading group, and attended some useful trainings etc, but I've still got a lot to learn. #AllyPledge https://twitter.com/ProfRachelGaN/status/1267447635595743232?s=20
Trying to be ally and a diversity activist in 2020, I've learnt that there are few easy wins in the fight for equity. I've seen some small steps forward and some big steps backward. I've realised more than ever before that we're in this for the long haul.
So, I'm not making any big new pledges in 2021. I'm pledging to stand my ground, keep my shoulder to the wheel and keep pushing forward on everything I pledged to do last year and the year before. #AllyPledge.
If you've made a #AllyPledge before, or if you've been pushing for improved inclusion and diversity in your STEM environment - please keep on keeping on.
If you've never thought about these issues before - the @tigerinstemm resource list is a good place to start reading and thinking: https://www.tigerinstemm.org/resources
Once you've done some reading and thinking, make a decision as to what you are going to do to make a positive change in STEM, and consider posting it with the #AllyPledge hashtag. Let's make a difference togethere.
