modal verbs add information to other verbs. that's their job! they can add ideas like possibility, uncertainty, or obligation to another verb. grammatically, modal verbs follow their own rules.

# 1 : a modal verb is followed by an infinitive verb, without โtoโ.

# 2 : modal verbs can't be used in different times or tenses.
modal verbs don't have past, perfect or future tenses like regular verbs do. there are some cases where this is not 100% true
. for example, โcouldโ is the past tense of โcanโ in some cases. โwouldโ sometimes actsโ

like a past version of โwillโ. however, โcouldโ & โcanโ also have a present or future meaning. it's better to think about each modal verb individually tbh.
# 3 : modal vers are *auxiliary* verbs. that means you make negatives by adding โnotโ to the end of the verb.
โ example :
can โ can't
would โ wouldn't
might โ might not
negative model verbs are often contracted, although โmightโ not and โmay notโ are usually written fullyโ

without contractions. for โwillโ and โshallโ, the spelling changes in the negative :

shall โ shan't
to make a question, move the modal verb before the subject.
โ example :
a. ๐๐ต๐ผ๐๐น๐ฑ i tell him?
