I really dislike stuff like this. Divisive generalisations written in an articulate & eye-catching way, but which when analysed proves dishonestly selective & nothing more than an attempt to win applause for ‘enlightenment’

The obvious point being made is that if you have... https://twitter.com/matthaig1/status/1344981638250430465

...an issue with any of those mentioned then you’re a racist. A point made in a way that - if someone on the right did it - would be described as a dog whistle.

Well, I’m NOT a racist (I think I know myself well enough to state that) but you know what? I DON’T agree that...

...Lewis Hamilton should be knighted. Is that because he’s black? No. It’s because I don’t believe ANYONE should be knighted for success in a well paid sport they do for themselves, not for a country. I’d have the same reaction if they knighted Joe Calzaghe or Ricky Hatton.

I also don’t like Meghan Markel. Is it because she’s black? No. It’s because when I first saw her interviewed she claimed she didn’t know who Prince Harry was when they met. Which was bullshit. And so I immediately didn’t like her, exactly as I didn’t like Heather Mills...

...when she told an identical lie about meeting Paul McCartney (also it’s not a Royal Family or a Beatles thing; I’ve no time for either!!). I might be wrong but it made me take against her and I’ve never seen anything to change my mind.

And I happen to think Sadiq Khan...

...is an absolutely shit mayor. Is it because he is Asian or a Muslim? No, it’s because he’s a shit mayor and he has made it so I can’t drive from Baker Street to Kings Cross Station in less than about an hour!! During lockdown!! By the same note but with different example...

...reasons, I regard both Boris Johnson and Ken Livingston as having been equally shit mayors. Which suggests it’s probably more about the position than it is race!!

And finally Naga Munchetty who...I actually quite like. She gets stuck in when interviewing. That’s what I...

...like to see, on the BBC and anywhere else.

The point I’m making is this: if you have a following on social media - or anywhere - you cannot responsibly just throw around very clear suggestions that anyone who thinks a certain way about certain public figures must be...

...racist. Because there is a whole lot more to those public figures than their race, and reducing criticism of them or challenge to them as being automatically about their race is itself a form of racism; someone isn’t capable of being a shit mayor if they’re Muslim, no!?

A position like that, it’s divisive. And if you have influence, you are spreading that division.

If someone says something racist, call them out by all means. But it they say something negative about someone who is not white or Christian, don’t automatically throw that...

...label; it is divisive, it is very often inaccurate, it is most certainly lazy and frankly it does nothing to improve the kind of discourse that actually bridges ideological gaps and improves society.

Or, you know, not; just carry on calling people names.
