Luis Campos and Lille have garnered a reputation of being some of the smartest operators in the transfer market over the years.
Sven Botman, one of their Summer recruits, has been linked to making a move to Liverpool amongst other Premier League clubs in the January window.
Sven Botman, one of their Summer recruits, has been linked to making a move to Liverpool amongst other Premier League clubs in the January window.
Signed from Ajax in the Summer for a reported €8m, the 20 year old central defender has had a strong start to life for Les Dogues and has earned himself a call up to Netherlands senior national team.
Lille sit second in Ligue 1 with the league’s second best defensive record and have qualified from their Europa League group. Botman has played a key role in this, ranking top three amongst his teammates for blocks, interceptions and clearances per match.
Botman has played as the left sided centre back in a back four, he is left footed, stands at 6’4, possesses good strength and is fast. Centre backs of Botman’s profile are rare to find.
Defensively he is very strong in duels and defends aggressively, his physicality means that he can often recover if he makes a mistake and dominate in both boxes. He suits an intense style of football and has the attributes to play in a high line similar to Liverpools. https://twitter.com/boybetterknown_/status/1331267953258622977
Botman has an excellent passing range and has the ability to break lines using both feet. He has the vision to spot runs from teammates which would make him an asset to a team who carry a counterattacking threat. https://twitter.com/boybetterknown_/status/1340101828759973889
Development: Botman can improve on is his positioning and concentration. Sometimes he misreads situations and positions himself poorly in relation to the attacker he is up against, which can lead to him becoming isolated 1v1.
Botman has a lot of potential and should only improve with experience. He is yet to play lots of senior football because of this lack of experience there is still questions on how he would adapt stepping up to play in bigger matches and stages, and perform consistently.
However he has made a large impression already, making the step up seamlessly from his time on loan with SC Heerenveen to Lille playing with great composure at a tender age.
