What kind of relationship with tech do we want in 2021 and beyond? Once basic safety no longer requires us to be extremely online, will habit keep us wired that way despite ourselves?
I went to a painful, embarrassing place for this @BostonGlobe @GlobeIdeas story. It felt good. https://twitter.com/GlobeIdeas/status/1344985170374492162

Newspapers were a religion for my dad, who died in 1995 and never saw the digital era. So it's emotional to see my latest, on my own painful tech addiction—and maybe yours—splashed across the cover of one of my favorite paper sections in the world, @BostonGlobe @GlobeIdeas.

TECH ADDICTION
. I wrote today's @BostonGlobe @GlobeOpinion @GlobeIdeas cover story, on whether we can save ourselves from it in 2021. As new low-tech devices allow us to be a little less wired, a bit more thoughtful, are we up for it? Thread here later. https://www.bostonglobe.com/2021/01/01/opinion/my-name-is-greg-im-addicted-tech/

"Should I get a Light Phone II for [my preteen?]" a friend texted, after seeing my @BostonGlobe @GlobeIdeas story on tech addiction and the potential (or not) of 'lighter' devices. Smartphones are frying kids brains and stressing their parents. What to do? https://www.bostonglobe.com/2021/01/01/opinion/my-name-is-greg-im-addicted-tech/
My advice: by all means get @remarkablepaper, or @thelightphone—which I called the "device of the year for the post pandemic era," precisely because it won't "ruin your life" like some other phones—but only as part of an honest conversation about what all this tech is even FOR...
You can't replace "digital crack cocaine" (quoting @drjuliea) with something lighter and expect a kid's brain—not to mention our own lizard brains—to just "adjust." How would YOU adjust if you tried to immediately replace actual crack with green tea? https://www.bostonglobe.com/2021/01/01/opinion/my-name-is-greg-im-addicted-tech/
To cover lighter tech/tech addiction for @BostonGlobe @GlobeIdeas, I knew I couldn't just do a straight product review. So for the first time, I detailed my own tech addiction, one of the hardest experiences of my life. What's YOUR experience been? https://www.bostonglobe.com/2021/01/01/opinion/my-name-is-greg-im-addicted-tech/
...My tech addiction helped kill a long-term relationship, nearly fried a book contract, and threatened worse. Thankfully it drove me to attend the wonderful @SMARTRecovery (in '08!) where others were like, "What?!" but ultimately accepted and helped me. https://www.bostonglobe.com/2021/01/01/opinion/my-name-is-greg-im-addicted-tech/
Come to my @BostonGlobe @GlobeIdeas cover story on tech addiction for @remarkablepaper @thelightphone reviews or my "ugly cry" personal story, stay for brilliant thoughts on being human in a technological world from therapist @dremilyanhalt... https://www.bostonglobe.com/2021/01/01/opinion/my-name-is-greg-im-addicted-tech/
“If it’s not our phone distracting us, it’ll be something else,” - @dremilyanhalt told me. “We need practice sitting still with uncomfortable feelings and thoughts that being human brings up...To feel joy...you also have to feel sadness..." https://www.bostonglobe.com/2021/01/01/opinion/my-name-is-greg-im-addicted-tech/
“Almost everything in our society is a shortcut, a cheat code...take the straight path through, & it won’t feel good all the time, but feeling our feelings without panic or judgment, we can fold them into who we are, so we don’t need to constantly shoo them away." - @dremilyanhalt
