Nobody's ever taught you how to live out on the street
And now you're gonna have to get used to it
You say you never compromise
With the mystery tramp, but now you realize
He's not selling any alibis
As you stare into the vacuum of his eyes
And say do you want to make a deal? https://twitter.com/PsychoSchmitt/status/1304451382263582721
I don't think there is anything surprising about this finding. It can be summarised as: ppl who live in poorer areas learn to survive on their wits more, basically bc they have to, shocker, & that includes being more hyper-vigilant about possible signs of danger, shock.
The moral of the story? We should have more working-class Psychiatrists & Clinical Psychologists. 4% of the medical profession in this country are w/class, its prob not much better for Clinical Psychology, who are also overwhelmingly m/class in my experience.
How many Clinical Psychologists grew up on a council estate like I did? Very few I would imagine & yet when you work in secondary mental health services, overwhelmingly, the patients you come across are lower down the socio-economic ladder, not further up, unfortunately.
‘Applied post-modernists’ over-emphasise the importance of ‘lived experience’ but lets not go to the other extreme & pretend it doesn't matter at all shall we? Ofc it matters, to some degree.
The medical profession & professions like Clinical Psychology get pushed into diversifying their professions on the lines of race/ethnicity & gender but class? Not so much Im afraid.
Thats the diversity agenda in a nut-shell

Behold all the marvellous diversity!

Black middle-class psychologists educated at a Russell Group Uni,
Asian middle-class psychologists educated at a Russell Group Uni,
LGBT middle-class psychologists educated at a Russell Group Uni
This applies to all the professions btw, not just the medical profession or psychology.
As long as these professions are seen to be ‘diverse’ along the lines of race/ethnicity, sex/gender & sexuality no one cares a fig as to the class background of these professions or any profession for that matter.
But they should care imo.
