Starting 2021 off in style with some concrete spotting on Southampton Common. Second World War #EmbarkingtheDDayArmada military concrete, since covered with tarmac twice. Also clearly visible is a typical passing place. There were 4 D-Day marshalling camps on the Common.
How can we be sure of the concrete's age? These drawings show the improvements required. The prevalence of concrete strongly (in my humble opinion with 99% certainty) suggests the resurfacing was abandoned and the tracks were re-laid instead.
It's possible that the concrete fulfilled the widening part of the requirement, but it's visible on both sides of the track. Also that first layer of tarmac doesn't look like the resurfacing part of the requirement as it doesn't extend to the concrete edge. It's likely that it...
...was laid much later, after the grass verge had grown over the track edge. The only way to be certain of the exact construction will be to scrape the tarmac off and see the whole layer. We start tomorrow.
