Seafront redevelopment at Whitley Bay; a thread.
1. This won an Inside Housing development award in 2019, apparently. It must’ve had a bit of a budget, with all that glazing: what it seems to have lacked is an architect with any skill.

2. The north- and east- facing gob-on balconies on this beauty take full advantage of the North Sea wind... I mean views, but the piece de resistance has gotta be the promenade-facing street frontage which really celebrates those meter cabinets!
3. On the plot next door, compass developments NE ltd vous propose ‘whiskey bends’ which seems to have learned the lessons of its crazy modern neighbour and is reverting to Shit Housebuilders pseudo-traditional. Smell the bourbon. Hic.
(If only there was a street literally around the corner where you could pick up some clues on what might... oh.)
4. This has, at least, had some thinking go into it about how to maximise the opportunities of the location for the benefit of the residents without totally neglecting the street... it’s just dark and a bit ugly and overglazed.
5. This should be OK as it’s basically a retrofit, but even it can’t escape the scourge of the zany windows.
6. An example from a previous generation of redevelopment, which has really set a standard to live up to.
7. A beefeater and premier inn have embraced the emergent local plastic gob-on vernacular, but although they are obviously dire they get a free pass because...
8. ...they have cross-subsidised a decent rescue of the Spanish City, and regeneration-by-premier-inn is of course the spirit of the age of levelling up. Happy New Year!
