Checking out the new Moynihan Train Hall, truly a tale of 2 stations right now. Saw some drug dealing, stepped over loose food debris, passed a guy smoking a joint next to the subway at Penn, but on the other side...
Truly, I’ve heard nothing but praises: we deserve this, a station fit for NY, a relief from the old Penn Station. The first people to come on New Years call it a hopeful sign of more good to come this year.
Although the exclusivity is already instituted, I was barely allowed to even look at the LIRR waiting areas, and even w/ a press pass had to basically sneak into the Amtrak waiting lounge to take a peek. Also station is closed 1am - 5am. Those hours sound familiar...
For sure a lot of folks would like to see the Kehinde Wiley stained glass. It’s great and I had to all but stumble on it by accident (go to 33rd street entrance b/w 8th and 9th. What I thought was a statement by the artist turned out to be a “rules of conduct sign.”
And I’m sure the NYT review and @Gothamist made these brilliant observations already https://gothamist.com/news/cuomo-cuts-ribbon-light-filled-moynihan-train-hall I just wanted to go in with fresh eyes. Ok, I’m out. Listen to @WNYC tonight to hear the voices of the first members of the public to visit Moynihan Train Hall.
I popped down to the LIRR platform just to see what life down there was like. Hasn't changed, I knew that, but when I tried to get back to the glorious train hall, I just ended up back at the old Penn. Going up the stairs feels like a crap shoot, never know where you'll end up.
