The term was first coined by Kimberlé Crenshaw
According to the OED It is “the interconnected nature of social categorisations such as race, class, and gender, regarded as creating overlapping and interdependent systems of discrimination or disadvantage”
The Air Quality Management Resource Centre found that those in the poorest areas emitted the least amount of nitrogen oxide while those in the most affluent areas emitted the most and that traffic pollution within poorer areas is likely caused by drivers from more affluent areas
The Environmental Defense Fund emphasises that those with underlying health conditions are at risk of adverse health outcomes
Those in Low-Income , Minority, and disabled communities are more likely to face adverse economic consequences such as missed work days.
Intersectionality includes recognising that historically social justice movements have unfairly privileged the work and lifestyles of White, able-bodied, cis-het allosexual, financially privileged people and doing the work to amplify marginalised voices
