2020 was an incredibly tough year, but in @bhamCityCouncil we’ve been working hard behind the scenes to plot our recovery and renewal as a City. Hope! In 2021 we look forward and will seize the moment for the benefit of all citizens
To focus our work we have 3 mutually dependent priorities; 2 requirements; and I’ll close this thread with 2 observations
Priority 1: no stone unturned in our pursuit of growth for the benefit ALL residents in our City and Region - with a focus on those who need it the most. Without growth we are lost - but we will also lead the way on sustainability and be a beacon for carbon reduction
Priority 2: we will lead the reform of public services so that they focus on supporting people before they tip into crisis. A preventative system that builds agency, power, wealth and connects people to the prospects of economic recovery
Priority 3: we will revitalise civic engagement and public participation, recognising all parts of the Council have a part to play in building trust and winning consent for change in our City. City wide through to hyper local
Requirement 1: unpinning all of this, a fresh and vigorous approach to equalities. A rich understanding of the structural barriers that hold too many people - to both focus our work and hold ourselves to account.
Requirement 2: we will build an organisation capable of delivering the above day in day out, when no one is looking or checking. Our size is our greatest asset, we need to wield it.
Observation 1: our stance isn’t that of Britain’s second City – we’re a global City with an ambition to be the best place to live in the world. The Commonwealth Games is a remarkable opportunity to show what that means
Observation 2: if levelling up is going to mean anything in this parliament, its going to be Birmingham and the West Midlands that can deliver it. So, let’s get to it, in partnership, in solidarity, with humility but with fire in our tummies. Happy New Year – lets make it great!
