Seen bad takes from people attacking those who are grateful for things in 2020. Last year was garbage but life’s not that simple. Weirdly, some of the things I’m most grateful for were in direct response to the worst things happening. Life is complicated
Pandemic, deaths, job losses, not seeing loved ones etc? Awful. The worst. But given that it’s happening I’m grateful and amazed that we have vaccines already. This is an astounding achievement
We’re not so lucky here on Gammon Island but I’m grateful that so many countries handled the pandemic expertly, saving lives and quickly getting life back to relative normality
All the racist murders and other crimes by the police in the US? Terrible and not new. But given it happened, I’m grateful that technology means we’re seeing footage from people on the ground showing what’s really going on
News station: *shows footage of a police officer kneeling in respect*

Teen with a smartphone: *shows same officer attacking unarmed protestors for no good reason*

Grateful that more people paid attention this year and hopefully that continues
There are people on Twitter who will complain if you say something positive when something terrible is happening. You’re allowed personal victories. You can be happy you got a new job while people are losing theirs. It’s sad and happy. You’re allowed to feel simultaneous emotions
You should be grateful for things that made you personally happy when times are tough. It’s not disrespectful to have mixed emotions. I mean saying it to someone’s face while they’re in mourning? Sure, don’t do that
Here are some little things that cheered me up. I’m grateful that Nintendo delayed Animal Crossing from December to March. It meant the devs weren’t crunched so hard, which results in a better game, and it came weeks after lockdown started here. I needed its positivity
Taylor Swift in a small way and BTS in a huge way decided to just own 2020. I needed things to enjoy while everything else was going wrong and they did help me
I miss hanging out with friends and hugs but I’m grateful we at least had ways to chat “face to face” in 2020. The internet is sometimes terrible and we’re not paying enough attention to how it’s changing us but sometimes it’s just the best thing ever
