My books of the year. 1: the imagined.
I’m not really interested in trying to judge the “best”, because mood / life / individuals / Covid / art / subjectivity; but these four works of fiction will forever summon up 2020 to me! & all are HARDCORE good! The odd people of the world!
2: the REAL.
I started 2020 with Hrabal’s violent book about his cats, HARD loved Briggs on translation and Clancy on teaching, and the Annie Dillard filled my ears and mind with amazement as i drove back & forth through deserted London. All, again, such perfection.
3. This book was probably the thing I read this year which I found the most.. HUMAN. And yet Handke is an absolute example of the trouble we have when we detest someone’s real life VIEWS. Should probably have put next to ANY Pema Chodron book about compassion.
Finally: 4 books I know about from my SOCIALS. The opposite of Handke - where i think the human being is great too! But all these writers have done such lovely lasting stuff to my brain - I see birds, statues of women, dumplings, & the Upper Newtownards Road all differently now x
Aw I feel like going “thanks for the retweet @rickburin”, gonna party like it was 2008 💅
