Happy New Year #booksof2020 starting in January.

‘My Sister, the Serial Killer’ was brilliant, as was Hisham Matar’s ‘Anatomy of a Disappearance’

Oil prices were up, and Iran was in the news - although I had been meaning to read @alexvtunzelmann history of Suez&Hungary
#booksof2020 These were the 90 book completions. I’d just returned from vacation where I’d tried a seedlip spice ‘cocktail’ for the first time, triggering a whole new interest in 2020.
Food and drink would feature heavily in my 2020 reading. By March we were in lockdown.

As we went into lockdown. Books on house cleaning and trying to keep plants alive. Plus some Tolstoy and Thomas Mann. ‘Elizabeth and her German Garden’ was my last commuting book. I also discovered Hurst Publishers and the book by Kaye Whitman’s niece
Then came Ramadan in lockdown. #Booksof2020
Elif Batuman was very funny
The Jim Wolfreys book was insightful on how fringe politics can become mainstream
Food was still a big theme
The Gretchen Rubin book was fantastic. Clear up small spaces to feel instantly happier - how true
As we got into summer, History was a big theme. I was still trying to figure out cooking (Donna Hay’s book has the nicest pictures). Patrick Leigh Fermor was also very good to read. #Booksof2020
‘Days in the Caucasus’ was unusual. Lawrence Durrell’s ‘Bitter Lemons’ about Cyprus was great - the prose is a joy to read. Also, my best economics read of the year was on global imbalances, despite the odd title ‘Trade Wars are Class Wars’. Best I’ve read on GermanReunification
After the summer holidays, work was busy between Sept and Nov, and other reading really slowed. (It was all monetary policy reviews, IMF papers, financial stability, rating agency reports). So much fun! Also Barack Obama’s book was lengthy
And then along came the Dec holidays with some reading catchup.
Much-recommended, new (to me) writer: Rania Mamoun, author of #ThirteenMonthsofSunrise

Back to the books that are still in progress. #HappyNewYear2021
PS. #booksof2020 Did I ever learn how to cook?

No, still struggling. But the reading is immense fun
