In honor of Haitian Independence day approaching the timeline. Let me drop some knowledge on the FIRST BLACK REPUBLIC 🇭🇹
During the regime of Tousissant Louverture, Haiti and its free black folk assisted the US in gaining independence against the British at Savannah.
In 1822, General Jean-Pierre Boyer led Haitian troops in a successful invasion of the spanish colony, where they abolished slavery. Today it is known as Dominican Republic.
Britain, Denmark, the Netherlands & Sweden were the first to recognize Haiti and create diplomatic relations. France did not officially recognize Haiti until 1838 under the Ordinance of 1825, imposing a heavy indemnity on Haitians to repay France for lost profits from slavery.
The Vatican & the United States isolated Haiti until the second half of the 19th century. This isolation caused a stunt in Haiti’s growth economically, politically, & socially.
Under the Petion regime, Haiti repeatedly provided aid to Bolivar, leader of independence movement, against Spain, for the possibility of ending slavery in liberated Spanish territories.
In return, Haiti and its participation was refused in the 1825 hemispheric Congress of Panama due to the US continued isolation and the support from these countries. Latin America refused to have diplomatic relations w/Haiti due to the US and Vatican City (the Pope) .
In 1821, the US profited off of Haitis imports but a lower percentage of Haiti’s exports to the US led to a greater disadvantage for Haiti from a 80 percent trade deficit.
In 1915, the United States sent Marines to take $11 million out of the National Bank of Haiti as a payment that might be needed to pay back any debt with the US.
So before I hear any Haiti slander, remember WE sacrificed so much just to end up in the position we’re in. We were robbed and thrown to the side like a rag doll. So put some respect in my country because WE created this !! 🇭🇹
Also, I would highly recommend Black Jacobins by James C.L.R & Haiti: State Against Nation by Michel R. Trouillot. I learned so much from these books about my own country!
