These are the top 5 books I read this year. Focusing on media, organizations, the fight between pathogens & people, social mobility & the power of language; these 5 books, in a way, encapsulate 2020 for me. #2020Books
I will start off with People Like Us written by a dear friend of almost 14-years. @hm_hashi through his personal experience details the structural challenges that hamper the progress of minority people & the keys to attaining social mobility.
Biography of Resistance written by @mhzaman came out just weeks after the worst of the covid-19 virus manifested and provides a rich account of both the history & the fight against pathogens & alarming way they spread. It felt surreal reading such a book during a global pandemic.
In Merchants of Truth @JillAbramson chronicles the changing landscape of the news media & the fight to present the facts. There’s been some controversy about the book, but I feel that doesn’t take away the fact that this a great book.
In Reinventing the Organization, Arthur Yeung & @dave_ulrich apply modern organization research & their own experiences, the authors provide the blueprints of creating a modern, responsive and integrated organization.
As someone who did a masters thesis on organizational resilience, this book was such a delight to read. I can’t recommend it enough.
@FrankLuntz’s Words that Work is a highly engaging book on the power of words and in framing narratives and selling political messages. In this book, @FrankLuntz draws from his vast experience to take the reader on a very delightful journey as he explains the tricks of the trade.
