Year-end threads are a bit hard for British people who feel very awkward about such things. But here are some stories I wrote, and the amount I made. Hopefully, this helps someone ask for more money or fuck up a racist statue or something.
https://gearpatrol.com/2020/03/03/why-cargo-bikes/ This one for @gearpatrol featured me doing maths! I made $450 and got to take a run at Tesla posers. win win.
I'm really proud of this one! It's the same outlet and the same price and it is about how masculinity is mostly nonsense and about how much I love my cat. https://www.gearpatrol.com/outdoors/a696908/cat-sized-tiny-tent/
And then the plague times arrived! I enjoyed writing this piece for @EsquireUK about my dad's memes. I made 200 British pounds (which will be worth fuck all shortly as we are currently Brexiting) https://www.esquire.com/uk/life/a32066844/coronavirus-memes-parents-grandparents/
This one for @undarkmag is about how I, and many others, cross borders to buy life-saving insulin at less ridiculous prices . I got $500 for this and cold pitched them https://undark.org/2020/04/23/covid-19-borders-insulin/
Then I got really into statues. Another Esquire piece on why statues of racists don't belong in a democratic society. https://www.esquire.com/uk/latest-news/a32821261/edward-colston-statue-bristol-saddam-hussein-iraq/
And this little chestnut for @PopMech on how to bring the bastards down. This one got me $400 and a diverse range of death threats! https://www.popularmechanics.com/science/a32870657/remove-statue-science/
Then I wrote about anti-fascism for @SmithsonianMag
I enjoyed this one and made $450 IIRC https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/brief-history-anti-fascism-180975152/

A bit more on anti-fascism, this time for @NatGeo
I made $800 here. The young woman I wrote about got arrested after this, which is fucking disgusting. She's amazing. https://www.nationalgeographic.com/history/2020/07/history-of-raised-fist-global-symbol-fighting-oppression/

Then the cops maced me in the face! So I wrote about that and how they also accused a femme POC of lyching. Rates at Slate are pretty dire. I think I got $250 for this but it was an important story. https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2020/09/san-diego-police-protests-lynch-law.html
Lil story on how cycling is still racist AF for @NBCNews . Who knew? I got $400 for this one in response to a call for pitches https://www.nbcnews.com/think/opinion/tour-de-france-2020-featured-one-black-cyclist-k-vin-ncna1240426
I wrote this because Ben Shapiro asked for it
. $300 for @HUCKmagazine . I wrote a story for them earlier in the year about @greggdeal and @weshoyot who are both amazing. https://www.huckmag.com/perspectives/a-brief-history-of-the-molotov-cocktail/

More cop stuff. Here they are stealing someone's phone. $600 for this in the very wonderful to write for @inputmag https://www.inputmag.com/culture/what-happens-if-the-cops-steal-your-phone-deny-it
It became pretty clear this year that the cops only protect themselves. But we can protect us. I wrote about the Trans gun world and two particularly boss ladies I got to interview. I really enjoyed this and the response to it. Also $300 https://www.huckmag.com/perspectives/reportage-2/inside-americas-lgbtq-gun-rights-groups/
All summer I have been watching the DHS destroy the homeland of our Kumeyaay friends. I wrote about it earlier for Sierra and again here for @WeAreDrilled I made $1000 for the story and $300 for photos and got an excuse to sleep in my truck in the desert! https://www.drillednews.com/post/native-american-indigenous-protests-border-wall
But maybe the real 2020 was the friends we made along the way? I love you all fam, especially those of you who have cleaned irritants out of my eyes or looked baffled as I scream swear words nobody has ever heard this side of the Atlantic
