Some reflection on
. I hope it is clear it was speedy work from hard working scientists.
What may not be clear, however, is that while I may be the "Andersen" in the "Andersen Lab" I played no role - incredibly dedicated students, postdocs, and staff did all this.

This particular timeline is just one example of the accelerated science that has been ongoing since the beginning of the pandemic. There are numerous other examples - from tons of labs across the world - this one just happened to get some attention.

Back to yesterday, I was fast asleep, blissfully unaware of the hard work going on in the lab because (I thought...) we had shut down the lab for the holidays. When I woke up, I had a 3:41am "heads up" Slack message...

So let me introduce you to the heroes who did this - and so much more - work. They chose to work through the night - as they have done so many times since the beginning of the pandemic - to get important data out to the public as quickly as possible.

This type of work necessarily involves a lot of people, but let me highlight some of the main scientists here - Shashank and the whole EXCITE team over at @UCSanDiego, and Al, Catie, Karthik, and Mark from @scrippsresearch.

Together with healthcare workers, frontline workers, and other essential workers, they're tired and they desperately need a break

When we say "we need to do more testing!", "we need more sequencing!", and "we need more ICUs!", it is important to remember that all those things require people - and people, like money, don't grow on trees

), thank you for letting me be part of your exciting science - I'm forever grateful.

Importantly, huge thanks to the Laurent, Yeo, and Knight labs at @UCSanDiego, and our collaborators at @SanDiegoCounty and elsewhere who make this work possible.

to @CDCgov and @NIAIDFunding for funding
