Everyone keeps talking about how awful 2020 was, and how glad they are to see the calendar turn. Don’t get me wrong, 2020 sucked in so many ways. But there’s so much I’m grateful for.
I got to welcome a new baby girl into the world. Despite her heart defect, my company provides me with adequate health insurance and our $760,000 bill (yes, you read that right) was reduced to less than $2,500.
We were able to get her one of the best pediatric heart surgeons in the world, and didn’t have to get on a plane or leave the country to do it. We barely left our zip code. I've been to plenty of countries where her condition was a literal death sentence.
I witnessed the org I'm privileged to lead, @teamrubicon, rise to the occasion and serve over 300 communities amidst a global pandemic. I saw a decade’s worth of work payoff in the form of tens of thousands of our fellow citizens served when they needed it most.
I watched TR’s volunteers selflessly deploy to the Gulf Coast for hurricane after hurricane to help people they’d never met in communities they’d never been to. They represented the greatest of American ideals - selflessness and sacrifice.
The horrific, inexplicable killings of multiple young black Americans forced a long-overdue dialogue that was brutal and troubling - and necessary. The road ahead is challenging, but I’m hopeful our country is finally ready to reckon w racism.
Despite 1 in 1,000 Americans dying from this disease, not a single person in my family or close friends have succumbed, but my heart breaks for all the families that have lost so much.
I watched with wonder as scientific brilliance brought us MULTIPLE viable vaccines to a novel disease that didn’t exist a year prior. STEM is sexy. #science
Oh, and the friggin' @TheRock rocked a @TeamRubicon Greyshirt.
Despite “having” to work from home due to COVID, I realize how lucky I am that I could do my job from home, and thus continue to provide for my family. It also afforded me the chance to watch my toddler grow through her 2nd year of life, perhaps the greatest gift ever received
Working from home also gave me a chance to help my wife with a tough pregnancy, something that would have been impossible with my pre-COVID travel schedule.
Despite the best efforts of many, I witnessed our beautiful democracy once again work; and I look forward to the peaceful transition of power that makes America so special. When democracy wins, America wins - regardless of your party.
We can look at 2020 for all of its ugliness, or we can reframe our perspective and choose to be grateful for what this year gave us. Thank you, 2020, for all the blessings you brought. Can't wait for 2021. Happy New Year. #2020isDead #LongLive2020
