what are you eating #NewYearsEve/ #NewYear2021?

won't be dinner as usual, but with coordinated menu & zoom-we're share our meal

what traditions do you follow?

ours are based on slave history

"Peas for pennies, greens for dollars & cornbread for gold" is an old Southern saying
black-eyed peas, first domesticated in Africa 5K yrs ago arrived in North America on slave ships.

during war the union soldiers loved beans but didn't eat peas as they thought it was livestock food

those left behind peas morphed into hoppin' john
because of their color & the way they lay on a plate after cooking, collard greens represented “folded money”

ever fold your money?

collard greens are said to bring prosperity to the eater in the new year & are often eaten w/Hoppin' John
love warm cornbread?

on New Year’s Eve-this soul food staple is said to bring riches into your life-specifically disposable income

i add creamed corn & bit of heat, mix & toss into hot cast iron skillet w/browned butter https://www.today.com/recipes/al-roker-s-skillet-cornbread-two-ways-recipe-t166070
slaves were always left w/undesirable plants, seeds & parts of meat - aka “livestock food”

pig feet, fatback & chitlins are part of Black traditions

again, a food that massas & whites didn't eat

symbolism-pigs root forward in mud & symbolize progress
haitian soup joumou aka "freedom soup"
a creamy pumpkin-based soup blended w/beef
slaves could not eat it-but they had to prepare it

when haiti broke from france 1804, the soup came a symbol of liberation, pride & freedom for all
corn pudding - my grandfather was blackfoot & crow #indigenous & always scraped the corn by hand. it was then mixed with sugar, cream, vanilla, butter & cinnamon & baked
we add in whatever dishes our households love but there are is than food. my grandmom was not superstitious but her mom may have been & so, these were passed to the family

#BlackLivesMatter
cleaning:

growing up we would clean the house

it had to do w/the belief that cleaning clears negative energy and makes room for new blessings and growth in the new year

make sure to open windows to help clean negative energy
Watch Night aka Freedom’s Eve

a christian service on New Year’s Eve
a celebration & remembrance of the Emancipation Proclamation (Jan 1 1863) that freed slaves in confederate states

many mainline Protestant churches in US sponsor a watch service
end of tweet

thank you, all of you, for being such great resisters and i wish you a very happy new year
