Here are some good movies I watched this year.

POSSESSOR (2020)
Hard sci fi and hallucinatory nightmare at once

PASTORAL: TO DIE IN THE COUNTRY (1974)
A childhood as a series of jumbled images, the director seems to be playing a game of how many rules of cinema he can break
MEDIUM COOL (1969)
A documentary pretending to be fiction*, about the way media and activism work or maybe do not work.

LA CHINOISE (1967)
Fiction pretending to be a documentary, about the way Marxism and activism work or maybe do not work.

* (The DNC protest scenes are real)
SHADOW (2018)
A kung fu movie with no kung fu, just dread-soaked palace intrigue, haunting minimalist music and leached of all color. It's on Netflix

COME DRINK WITH ME (1966)
Classic genre-defining wuxia with gorgeous cinematography+lighting and a funny, twisty fairy tale plot
MIND GAME (2004)
Treats cinema like play-doh, leaving you lost swimming in strange beautiful images until it all comes together like a magic eye

REDLINE (2009)
Genre anime as a visual feast, a gloriously over-the-top sci fi death race trying to be The Most every moment
AN OVERSIMPLIFICATION OF HER BEAUTY (2012)
A filmmaker brutally, gorgeously critically picking apart his own art & self. The "Random Acts of Flyness" guy

YOU WERE NEVER REALLY HERE (2018)
The Gritty Thriller reconstructed as something larger. Joaquin Phoenix is amazing actually
