I am heartbroken by the killing of Dolal Idd by Minneapolis police last night. Every person’s life matters, and every death by violence is a tragedy. When someone is killed by the police, I consider that a failure to provide safety and justice for every member of our community.
Once again, our community is grieving.

While I respect that this is an ongoing investigation, I will continue to push for transparency and accountability. We must fully understand the circumstances of last night’s shooting, and it is critical for the public to get answers.
We must also investigate this incident with an eye on how to prevent these kinds of tragedies in the future. The decision to release some of the body camera video is a welcome first step, but only a first step. Footage & future information here: http://www2.minneapolismn.gov/police/records/frequent.
This event was not inevitable. It could have been prevented. We must not accept this kind of outcome as simply part of providing public safety. I believe that we can build a public safety system that does not lead to people being killed by police, year after year.
I remain committed to the vision the Council approved in June to transform our city’s approach to public safety. We must dismantle our broken system of public safety and build a more humane, holistic, compassionate, & effective system that prevents violence and keeps us all safe.
