When querying a manager, I recommend sending a friendly, short email that says a little bit about who you are and pitches the BEST longline that you have, asking them if they would like to read it. If they say yes, then send it to them (make sure to keep track of where it’s been) https://twitter.com/meganhughes93/status/1344371869487652865
Try to make the email evocative of the tone of your writing and personality. For example, if you’re a comedy writer, your query should be funny (but not crazy sounding—it’s a fine, fine line lol).
Don’t include more than one logline. If writers do this to me (and IF I respond), I usually just ask “which one is the best send me that one,” so it’s best to start off just with the best one initially.
I don’t recommend emailing multiple managers all at one company. We often (especially back when we were in the office together) talk about queries we received and jokingly feel slighted when someone has obviously spammed all of us (this doesn’t necessarily equal rejection, but
it’s not a good look to start with). On that note, don’t email a bunch of people all in the same To column of the email. Really you shouldn’t even be BCC’ing us all either. Make your queries personal.
But not too personal!! I’ve had people quote my own Instagram bio back to me when emailing my work address and I do not like that. You should stalk your target, but don’t let them KNOW that you’re stalking them.
Make sure you spell your target’s name right and also are emailing the right person!
Make sure if you’re emailing a manager you don’t tell them you’re looking for an agent and vice versa.
Do not follow up multiple times in the same day or same week.
Do not be rude if you don’t like the response that you get!
If they do read your script and send you feedback, don’t argue with it or tell them why it’s wrong.
I recommend sending your first round of queries to a couple of people at different companies. If you don’t get any bites, tweak your wording (and subject line) for the next round and do that until you start getting bites. Then you can cast the net wider.
