How are you supposed to just magically forget that people are capable of such things?
Even people who would have formerly seemed benign -- or even benevolent, caring, and/or kind?

The disappointment, heartache, suspicion, and guardedness make it much harder to give people the benefit of the doubt, to foster an environment that promotes grace rather than suspicion.
