Leadership has defined this past year, for me. Taught a leadership course, directed our MD-PhD program @UNMC_mdphd, and used all of my coping skills to withstand a national leadership vacuum. 1/11
1st, a thank you to some who I look to as leaders. I learned from each, up close or from a distance. 2/

I designed a med school course on professional development & leadership, rolled out for students kept out of clinic by the pandemic. I’ve never taken a leadership course, but I wish I had. #StillLearning #TeachToLearn 3/
Topics I felt were important for the next gen of physician leaders: Principles & traits of leadership. Bias & representation. Emerging leaders. Conflict resolution. Emotional intelligence. 4/
In this article, Dying in a leadership vacuum, the authors demonstrated leadership even as they critiqued its absence. Their acknowledgement of reality, while dire, was a relief to read.

Currently, I feel I’m watching the next chapter in this leadership vacuum—vaccine roll out. Imagine instead, a coordinated hiring effort to give injections and facilitate delivery. This could have already happened and millions more could get the shot. 6/
There were also less obvious and visible gaps in leadership this year. Who is providing a space for the nation to mourn, to struggle, and to adapt? We are grieving individually, but missing the connection of a collective moment. 7/
Soon, I hope to see leadership in planning. Active planning to handle the next pandemic, disaster, or tragedy. We’re all waiting to breathe a sigh of relief, but the next challenge will not respect our needed rest period. 8/
A national discussion on what worked would be a start. I hope there is leadership to set expectations that we don’t throw away our masks—another respiratory virus will come. Let’s plan now to use our masks every flu season. Fortify what works. 9/
The leader we need will model healthy behavior and healthy grief. She will practice communication to defend the rationale for keeping each other safe. She’ll put equity first, not an afterthought. Hopes for a new year. 10/
If you found yourself in new situational leadership roles this year, needing to speak up or act, to provide a rationale for caring for others, this extra work was extracted from you by a leadership vacuum. Thanks to all who filled in. We get through this together. /end
