My mother followed my dad from post to post, including overseas, for work. Sometimes he was apart from us.

But it was only when *my mother* was apart from us to pursue her dreams did our temporary family separations bother other people.
She went home to finish her Bachelors degree and members of my church fussed over how my hair was going to get done. 🥴
She moved first to Durham from FL for a job she’d been hoping came available for ages. We were eventually going to relocate there with her. The people we knew were utterly scandalized. Because how dare she leave her family for work? 🙄
Seeing my mother own and act on her desire for self-fulfillment alongside motherhood taught me early on how to ignore the societal pressure to martyr myself to family.
