A thread of gratitude and appreciation for the Canadian health care system: On New Year's Eve 2019 my mother received last rites at St. Joseph's Health Centre in Toronto, and 11 months later my daughter was at @SickKidsNews emergency, after breaking her jaw in a weird accident 1/
First, my mother: The nurses, doctors, techs and support staff at St. Joe's took exceptionally good care of her in the three weeks she was in ICU. Maybe because they knew she had been a nurse for three decades as St. Mike's. Probably just because that's what they do! 2/
Then in early December my daughter broke her jaw, and needed stitches in her chin. Off we went to @SickKidsNews in the middle of the night. I've been in a few emerges, and my mother had SO MANY ER stories, but the Sick Kids ER was calm. Everyone was lovely to my poor kid
She was in the same ER room her brother had been in four years earlier (bike accident.) She had a CT scan. She had stitches. In follow-up visits she saw the head of plastic surgery.
So, one hospital stay just as Covid was about to land, and one in the very heat of things. And every healthcare professional we met was doing amazing work under crazy difficult circumstances. And what was our bill? Canadians will know the answer.
Nothing. Zero. A big old goose egg. Don't talk to me about how we pay with our taxes. I would pay twice my taxes for that kind of care for people I love. And just as importantly for people YOU love.
So thank you, Canadian healthcare workers. Cleaners, technicians, nurses, EMTs, doctors, all of you. I'm sorry it's been such a crappy year. I hope next year is better. You make the world better. Rock on, 2021
