Our Director @MarieFollayttar reflected on 2020 with @raylevyuyeda of @mic. #mepolitics 1/
Our systems are designed to fund short term issue campaigns or candidates. Our organizations start and stop, our staff turnover and our volunteers often migrate with their organizer rather than stay with the organization. 2/
The country spent an obscene amount of money to try and unseat Susan Collins and we lost. Orgs w/no Maine roots came to our state and joined the fight. Organizations even 'popped up,' entered our movement sphere, spent millions and called local organizers for spokespeople. 3/
After the race ended, the offices were packed up, the volunteers no longer needed, the state is now a memory...until the next campaign cycle. 4/
If our movement funders continue to invest in short term pop up and pack it up power we will continue to lose. If our small dollar donors invest in the sexy viral ad without asking whether it will persuade voters we will continue to lose. 5/
If our volunteers are seen as disposable we will continue to lose; our people are our greatest resource. 6/
And yet, I am full of hope and optimism about the discussions around the Georgia Senate races. “Listen to local organizers” is a phrase that actualized can change how out of state and national organizations leverage their resources to build local power and earn a win. 7/
A special shout out to a National Partner who GETS it. @BeAHeroTeam, @lizjaff @AdyBarkan and @jpkbarnes listened to these roots for 2+ years and respected them.
