Today marks the 1 year anniversary of my first rheum appointment. It is absolutely wild to think about how I was last year compared to now. When I think of what I want to be like as a practicing pharmacist, I think of the relationship I have with my rheumatologist (a thread)
I’m not saying I ever *lied* to a provider but I may have not openly admitted to my problems with adherence. She caught on quickly that this was something I struggled with and helped me coordinate when to take them. She also would seek out deprescribing opportunities.
She never assumes that I know something just because I’m in pharm. Not assuming health literacy is so important especially in specialty areas that can be very complex. Everything is always in terms I understand but she also asks what I think of things given my background.
I am a part of every single decision. My priorities are always taken into consideration. I never leave an appointment feeling like I don’t know what “the plan” is and that is such a reassuring feeling.
She gets that I go away to school and has been the first provider to not let this serve as a barrier to care (even before COVID-19). If I need something while at school (if it’s simple enough to not warrant an appointment), she makes it work.
All in all, she’s amazing and I hope to build just as strong relationships with my future patients.
