One of the lasting impacts of 2020 will be the final shattering, for millions, of many of the myths of the United States. Our myths of invulnerability, the inevitable forward motion of progress, the beliefs that worked to say we're great and don't need to look at our flaws.
Of course for many of us these beliefs had already been shaken or shattered, but the sheer number of people who left these ideas behind this year will have an impact. And, now we must create better substitutes, based more in truth, empathy, and abundance.
If we don't create better substitutes to fill the vacuum, someone else will. In an increasingly agnostic world nationalism and capitalism have filled far too much of that void. Belief in both has plummeted this year, and will most likely continue to decrease.
So it's time to put our faith in something else. Something more like one another, instead of a nation or an ideology that twists selfishness into a virtue. And while whatever we choose to put faith in might not need a new myth, exactly, it'll definitely need a story, or stories.
