A final piece of sad news in the last hours of this worst of all years...
The bassist of the classic Dave Brubeck Quartet, the great Eugene Wright, has died. He was 97.
When I was writing my book, I knew I had to meet him and made the pilgrimage to Los Angeles. He was then 93 and I didn't know quite what to expect. But he was warm and very generous with his time - and he LOVED TO TALK. What a privilege it was to meet him.
This is how we got on...
So many great moments I could point to. But just listen to the way he glues this performance of "Three To Get Ready" together.
...and again...
And a solo feature...
And he even found the time to play bass (with Joe Morello on drums) on a Simon & Garfunkel record.
RIP Eugene.
