I can’t tell you how much I love this story. @BFQuinn and I both came up the same way in this business. I was freelancing and survived on bar tips until I was 28 and @mikemiller_KU gave me 40 hours a week at NBC. I think that’s important to share. (1/)
Brendan is as good as, if not better than, any writer covering college sports. At 29, he was this good, too, and he couldn’t get a job. Bartending was my main income just six years ago. I worked shifts until Oct. 2017 to help pay the bills. I say all that to say this: (2/)
Media in any form is not easy to get into. It’s hard to make this be your sole source of income. You have to be willing to work, you have to be willing to have weird hours and you have to accept that you may need supplemental income early on. (3/)
If you’re good, good things will happen. But I had many, many nights like the one Brendan described that felt like my life was completely fucked.

I’ll share one here. My bar was the pregame spot for road fans visiting GW. The father of that team’s coach came in one night. (4/)
He slammed a few Whatever Lites, started chatting with me and then said, I’m paraphrasing, “Oh shit, I know you, you’re really good .... so why are you bartending right now?”

That’s enough to push me over the edge. I think I threw up Chef Boyardee in an Uber that night. (5/)
Maybe I’m getting reflective because 2020 was so stressful. Maybe I’m tired because I was up until 5am churning out today’s content on @TheFieldOf68. But mostly I wanted to let people that are where I was a decade ago know that you can still get where you want to go. (6/)
If this is what you wanted, keep fucking chasing it. You’ll get there. If I can help, my DMs are open. I’ll do what I can.

Most importantly, don’t listen to the dad of an A10 coach, and definitely don’t eat two cans of ravioli after drinking the brown stuff on an empty stomach.
Oh, and we’ll surpass a combined audience of 6 million across the entire @TheFieldOf68 media network by the end of next week. If you’re a brand that needs a marketing campaign, we’ll get you eyeballs. Holler at me.
