jason getting killed and replaced by tim was classist. stephanie getting killed and tim taking back the robin mantle was sexist. duke's time as robin being ignored is racist. damian being villainized while tim resumes his role as robin is racist. there i said it!
1) denny o'neil, the editor of aditf, said that he tried making jason "less likable" leading up to his death by making him use "excessive force" on rapists and abusers (Batman #424) to ensure that readers would vote to kill jason.
the second plot where he survived would have landed him in a coma, where he wouldn't have woken up anytime soon. no matter what, dc comics' intentions were very clear: they didn't want jason to be robin.
replacing jason, who had a harsh attitude and rough speech due to living on the streets, with tim who was well-spoken and mild mannered boy from a wealthy family, is classist and not a coincidence from the editors who constantly made their hate for jason obvious.
2) dylan horrocks, a writer for batman: war games, said that dc comics wanted the writers to kill off stephanie. he described writing her death as "the most depressing weeks of my life." when they made her robin, he said it was a "trick" for readers and that they all knew +
+ her being robin was only temporary. since before she even became robin, they had intended to kill her off, but decided to give her robin first to lure in more readers. two days into writing stephanie's death, dylan told the writers room he didn't want any part of it.
dylan said that devin grayson (yes the one who wrote THAT nightwing run, and was still doing so at the time) was the only other person in the writing room who was against stephanie's death aside from karen healey. dylan says that not everyone in the room was a cis white man +
and that "the industry is much more diverse and much more liberal and much more politically liberal than the comics necessarily imply" but how there are "commercial expectations" on their stories and how they could only do what the head editorial at dc comics said they could.
3) i honestly don't know a lot about duke, so naturally i don't have a lot to say. but saying he wasn't robin when his first appearance was literally in a series titled "WE ARE ROBIN" while wearing his own version of the robin suit is racism, internalized or not.
leaving duke out in fics even though they take place after robin war, lightening his skin in art, and all that other shit is unnecessary. i am this 🤏🏼 close to losing my mind with y'alls bullshit
4) I'm also getting a bit lazy with this thread because i'm tired but yes, damian is white on his father's side, and he's also chinese and arabian on his mother's side. ever since grant morrison decided to ruin talia's characterization because of—you guessed it, racism +
(which dc comics also has a record of hating moms who are POC, like lady shiva or cheshire) it's disappointing but not surprising to see damian getting similar treatment in current comics despite not actually doing anything wrong at all. but that's a conversation for another day!
now going back to the first tweet: i ain't saying you should hate tim drake! he's an amazing character! but please recognize that dc comics continously uses him as a plot device to stick in for damage control whenever they wanna get rid of a robin, which is bad for him as well.
anyways this post was originally only for robins but in the future we're gonna talk about how cass is canonically jason's age (ish) but is infantilized for being neurodivergent-coded and how barbara resuming her role as batgirl is ableist!
