I'm going to have to go thru my whole book MS and change my Qur'an translations from Arberry to M.A.S. Abdel Haleem aren't I?
I've waffled between the two the whole time and I think I've decided. Feel free to change my mind.

I love teaching with Arberry though, I've done comparative translation units with students to try to introduce them to the uniqueness of Qur'anic language and the fact that Arberry King James'ed the thing really means when students hear it they go BIBLE!
This conversation has taught me that I will probably make no one happy so I may as well make myself mildly amused. Thank you so much though, seriously, for all your recommendations! A lot of food for thought, and I really do hope someone writes a serious review essay of all this.
Oh and btw whenever I quote Tanankh I use the JPS translation and I feel like that's totally uncontroversial but *ducks*
(If any of you say "but Alter" please, know I agree with you, in the deepest welters and wastes of my soul)
